I got back to the office this afternoon and found that someone had broken in and taken a laptop and a guitar. The laptop was old and rickety. There was some data on it that I need for my campaign and some forms that I use everyday but nothing worth stealing. The guitar had great sentimental value–I took that guitar on the road on my last time out. It went to Memphis with me when we played the Hi-tone and I spent a beautiful summer at the Balinese Room in Galveston playing almost every weekend out over the water. It was a sunburst Nashville Telecaster and I’d like to get it back for the stories alone. In an ironic twist, while I was out and the burglar was in, I got a call from a D.A. I had been trying to reach for a while on case of mine. My case involves a burglary of a laptop and a guitar. The officer who took my report joked that I must be reconsidering the criminal cases I’ve defended. I don’t. I believe in the system. I am still more worried that the innocent person is going to be convicted. I read this last week that a case I had been contacted about but not retained had ended in conviction. Based on the facts in the record I’m not sure how the prosecution got a conviction. Effective assistance of counsel makes a world of difference.

July 10th, 2008I spent the 4th at a variety of events: parades, picnics and a huge fireworks display here in Pearland. One of the perks of being a candidate for public office is that you get invited to a lot of events. I was impressed by the size of the crowd, the diversity and the good spirits. I wondered, as I handed out balloons, cards and popcorn balls how many of the crowd to recite any of the Declaration of Independence. It is a powerful document and if you have not read it since high school I would recommend re-reading it.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” That is a great statement of core values.
